the history of reggae music

Reggae music
In 1968 many years known as the birth of reggae music. Actually there is no specific incident that became early marker muasalnya, except transitional musical tastes of the people of Jamaica Ska and Rocsteady, which was popular among the young in the first half until the late 1960's, the new music rhythm slower tempo: reggae. Perhaps frenetic and fast tempo Ska and Rocksteady less hit by the social and economic conditions in Jamaica which was full of pressure.

The word "reggae" probably derived from the pronunciation in African accent of the word "ragged" (clumsy motion of the body-like stamping on a man who danced to the accompaniment of music ska or reggae). Rhythmic elements of reggae music itself influenced R & B music that was born in New Orleans, Soul, Rock, rhythmic Afro-Caribean (Calypso, Merengue, Rhumba) and Jamaican folk music called Mento, which is rich with African rhythms. Rhythm of the music which many considered to be a precursor to reggae is Ska and Rocksteady, a musical interpretation of the R & B that developed in Jamaica laden with African-American musical influences. Technically and musically many Ska musicians exploration performed, including shaking the guitar upside down (up-strokes), applying pressure to the ringing tone is weak (syncopated) and multi-rhythmic drum beats complex.

Techniques and Rocsteady Ska musicians in playing musical instruments, much imitated by reggae musicians. But the music tempo is much slower with thud of the bass and rhythm guitar is more prominent. Character vocal patterns are usually heavy with songs such as praises (chant), which influenced tetabuhan rhythm, singing and mystical ways of Rastafari. A slower tempo music, in time to support the delivery of messages through the lyrics of songs associated with the Rastafari religious traditions and social issues and universal humanistic politics.

Album "Catch A Fire" (1972) that launched Bob Marley and The Wailers reggae quickly catapulted to the outside of Jamaica. Popularity of reggae in the United States supported also by the film The Harder They Come (1973) and reggae rhythms played by white musicians such as Eric Clapton, Paul Simon, Lee 'Scratch' Perry and UB40. Reggae rhythm was then affect streams of music in the decade after that, call it a variant of reggae hip hop, reggae rock, blues, and so on.

Jamaica
Musical roots reggae is closely related to the land which gave it birth: Jamaica. When discovered by Columbus in the 15th century, Jamaica is an island inhabited by Arawak Indians. The name Jamaica is derived from the Arawak vocabulary "xaymaca" which means "island of forests and water". Spanish and British colonialism in the 16th century destroyed the Arawak tribe, who was later replaced by thousands of black slave from mainland Africa. The slaves were employed in the sugar industry and plantation are scattered there. Dark history of oppression among humans began and lasted until more than two centuries. New in 1838 removed the practice of slavery, which is followed by the flagging world trade in sugar.

In the midst of hard work and the threat of oppression, the African slaves to maintain attachment to their homeland by maintaining the tradition. They tell of life in Africa with song (chant) and sounds (drumming) is simple. Interaction with the employers who came from Europe were membekaskan cross-cultural product that eventually became the original Jamaican folk tradition. If the black community in America or Europe to quickly fade their African identity, otherwise the black community of Jamaica still feel closeness with ancestral lands.

Reggae music itself was originally born from the streets Getho (township the rastafaria) in Kingson capital of Jamaica. This is what causes hair style dreadlocks adorned early reggae musicians and the lyrics of reggae songs laden with a cargo of Rastafari doctrine of freedom, peace and natural beauty, and the bohemian lifestyle. The entry of reggae as one of the elements of world music that also affects many other musicians of the world, automatically result in the flow of music is becoming one of the world public consumption goods. Thus, dreadlocks or dreadlock hair style and the lyrics of 'Rasta' in his songs became public consumption. In other words, dreadlock rasta and teachings have become pop production, became a pop culture, as the development of reggae music as a pop music.

Reggae music, as Rastaman, has become a form of a new subculture in this country, whereby the young people define and classify herself. Here, the reggae music became important as a taste, and Rastaman became a communal identity of a particular social group. Just how the social observer and also the members of the community's understanding of self and culture are chosen, in order to avoid erroneous interpretations that are harmful to them. The use of marijuana is one such example, where reggae is synonymous with marijuana and rastafarianisme was not a community of marijuana users.

A song from "Peter Tosh" (real name Peter McIntosh), frontman of The Wairles who eventually pursue a solo career. In this song, Peter Tosh and demands expressed support for legalizing marijuana. Because of this song, he was arrested and tortured by Jamaican police.

According to the history of Jamaica, the slaves brought drums from Africa called "Burru" which become part arrangement called "talking drums" (talking drum) is native of West Africa. "Jonkanoo" is a mixture of musical cultures of Africa, Europe and Jamaica consisting of drumming, rattle (musical instrument creaking) and conch blowing. This event occurs when Christmas comes masked dancers. Jonkanoos was originally a dance of the peasants, who only realized later that they actually communicate with the drums and conch. The next year, Calypso from Trinidad & Tobago came with Samba which originated from Central America and was introduced to the people - people of Jamaica to form a new blend called Mento. Mento itself is a simple music with funny lyrics accompanied by guitar, banjo, tambourine, shaker, scraper and rumba, or the bass. This form was then popular in the year 20 and 30s and is a form of Jamaican music that first attracted the attention of the entire island. Currently Mento tourism offerings can still be enjoyed. SKA who has appeared in 40 - 50s is actually mentioned by the History of Jamaican Music, influenced by Swing, Rythym & Blues of the United States. SKA is actually a big band sound with a horn arrangement (brass), piano, and beats fast "bop". Ska then easily switch and produce a form of dance "skankin" pad early 60's. Among other early Jamaican star Byron Lee And The Dragonaires which was formed in 1956 which was then regarded as the creator of "ska". The development of Ska which then slows the tempo in the mid-60s led to "Rock Steady" that Punta tune popularized by heavy bass and Leroy Sibbles of the Heptones and the group became the first Jamaican dance music in the 60s.

Roots reggae itself always explore the theme of the suffering of slave laborers (ghetto Dweller), a slave in Babylon, Haile Selassie (the human kind of god) and hope the return of Africa. After Jamaica independence in 1962, poor governance and the development of the Black Power movement in the U.S. and then push the rise of Rasta. Monumentalpun events occurred over this development.

Reggae itself is a combination of traditional accompaniment of African, American and Blues and folk (folk song) Jamaica. This synthesis of styles clearly demonstrate the authenticity of Jamaica and incorporate a knock broke - broke apart, strumming the guitar upwards, vocal patterns that 'preaching' and the lyrics are still about Rastafari religious traditions. Although many commercial benefits already gained from reggae, Babylon (Jamaica), often considered strict government limits the motion but not the political aspect Rastafarinya. "Reg-ay" arguably arise from the assumption that reggae is a style of Jamaican music is based on the American soul music but with the rhythm of 'behind' and the fabric of a prominent bass. The theme emang often about Rastafari, political protest, and rudie (hooligan hero).
